Friend
The world got smaller
and meaner
when you left
Friend!
I already knew
no one steps in
if you step out
you knew that invisible trip-wire
is real
Somehow you skipped over it
or under it
or around it
to show me the other side
And now
dropping from a graphite twilight sky
hundreds of black grackles
claim the barren crowns
of the tallest trees,
their cacophonies
portending
of darker days ahead
the lights go out
but still I see you
in memory of Dr. John Martin
African-American principal and consultant to the Pittsburgh Public Schools
